Why do women have Labiaplasty?
There are a variety of reasons that women choose to have labiaplasty, but the most common reasons are:
- Large or Uneven Labia Minora: Large and/or uneven labia minora (inner labia) are the most common reason for labiaplasty. Large or uneven labia minora can be a source of insecurity for many women, and can also cause pain during intercourse. Extremely large labia minora can cause a “bulge” in tight clothing, which is a very common reason why women consider the procedure.
- Large or Uneven Labia Majora: Large or uneven labia majora can also contribute to an unsightly bulge in tight clothing, and be a source of insecurity for many women. A labiaplasty for labia majora is a slightly different procedure than for the labia minora, but the results are just as satisfying to women who have it done.
- Painful Intercourse Due to Large Labia: Very large, or very uneven, labia minora can get in the way during sexual intercourse and cause pain, and a labiaplasty can sometimes help this issue as long as the pain is actually due to the size of the labia and not another more serious issue.
How Long Does A Labiaplasty Take?
A labiaplasty takes about 60 minutes, and although it can be done under local anesthesia in the office setting, you may prefer to have twilight or general anesthesia for a better overall experience.
How long does it take to recover after labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty is a fairly straightforward procedure with minimal downtime, and no stitches to take out, so most patients are able to return to work in a few days. However, it is necessary to avoid hot tubs, swimming pools, and all sexual activity for at least 6 weeks after the procedure.
