If you are sick of changing your shirt halfway through the day, or afraid to lift your arms because you know you’ll see sweat stains, you might have a condition known as hyperhidrosis.

Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for excessive sweating of the underarms, hands or feet caused by overactive sweat glands just beneath the skin. People with a mild form of hyperhidrosis may experience episodes of sweating when they are nervous or anxious, while people with the most severe forms may sweat constantly throughout the day. It can be an embarrassing problem to have, and quite costly if you think about having to change (and dry clean) several shirts every single day.

If you think you have hyperhidrosis, don’t sweat it (pun intended). There are two treatment options available for excessive sweating:

  1. Botox for Excessive Sweating of the underarms, hands, feet, and scalp. Keep reading below to learn more.
  2. Fiberoptic laser sweat gland ablation (SweatLipo) for the underarms only. Click here to learn more.

How does BOTOX treat excessive sweating?

BOTOX works by blocking the chemical signals from nerves that stimulate the overactive sweat glands. When the chemical signals stop, the amount of sweat these glands produce can be drastically reduced.

Do Botox treatments for excessive sweating work for women?

Bride-200x300Yes, BOTOX will reduce perspiration in everyone (men and women), and in most cases you can expect a 70-90% decrease in sweating. BOTOX doesn’t stop sweating completely, but for most people it leads to a very noticeable improvement. Women sweat less than men in general, but it can still be a problem in cases of true hyperhidrosis of the underarms, hands, and feet. Many women with very mild cases of hyperhidrosis confined to big life evens and anxiety-producing situations like your wedding day, also take advantage of the sweat blocking properties of Botox for their underarms. Keeping your wedding dress clean and dry for the entire day is usually well worth the 30 minute treatment time, especially for those beautiful beach weddings in the baking sun. If you want Botox for Sweating to kick in in time for your big day, you should have the treatment 2-4 weeks before the ceremony.

How long before I notice results from Botox for Sweating treatments?

BOTOX for sweating takes 2-3 weeks to start working, and will reach it’s full effect at approximately one month after the initial treatment. Some people notice a decrease in sweating after only a week, but this isn’t typical or expected for the majority of men and women who have Botox for Sweating treatments.

Is it bad to stop sweating?

No. Because BOTOX blocks the chemical signals in the treated area only, you don’t have to worry about sweat building up or going to another part of your body. The rest of your body still makes sweat like normal because the BOTOX only works in the areas that are treated.

How long does Botox decrease sweat production?

BOTOX for sweating can last up to 9 months, which is much longer than BOTOX for frown lines and crows feet (which usually lasts about 4-6 months). For most people, BOTOX for sweating is a once-a-year procedure.

Are there any more permanent treatments for excessive sweating?

Yes, there is a fiberoptic laser treatment that utilizes similar technology to laser liposuction, and is therefore referred to as SweatLipo. Even though there is no liposuction involved in this treatment, it has been shown to be very successful and nearly permanent in the majority of patients who have the simple 90 minute treatment. Are Botox for Sweating treatments painful?

No… you’ll barely feel a thing. In our office, we routinely use numbing cream under the arms to take away most of the discomfort. You may feel one or two very small pinches at the beginning of the procedure, but it’s actually a very easy and comfortable treatment… as long as it’s being done by someone who knows how to make you comfortable.
