Chin augmentation is a plastic surgery procedure that uses either injectable fillers like Radiesse, fat transfer, or a variety of implant options to enhance the appearance of the chin and jawline for a straighter, more defined, and more attractive look to the lower face.

Chin augmentation procedures are performed frequently in both men and women, and can be customized to almost any level of desired result. In many patients, only a weak chin may be the problem, while in other the entire jawline may need to be augmented to balance out the facial proportions. Likewise, some patients only require one of the above listed treatment options for an excellent result, while others may require a combination.

Dr. Nicholas Vendemia performs chin augmentation procedures for women and men. He is a leading cosmetic surgeon in Los Angeles with a reputation for custom care and beautiful results. Chin & Jaw Augmentation procedures can fix these common issues in men and women:

  • Weak chin and/or jawline
  • Weak lower facial profile
  • Jowls and micro jowls
  • A weak, non-square, jaw shape in men
  • An overprominent, square jaw shape in women

Surgical and Nonsurgical Options for Chin & Jawline Augmentation

  1. Injectable Fillers for Chin & Jawline Enhancement
Chin augmentation with injectable fillers is by far the most popular methodfor chin enhancement because it offers the best combination of immediate results, minimal downtime, a highly customized volume and shape, and safety. Fillers like Radiesse (Hydroxyapatite) are excellent options for bone augmentation procedures like chin and cheekbone augmentation because the product most closely resembles the natural chemical structure of bone and therefore gives a slightly more defined look that is expected from a bone augmentation procedure as compared to a soft tissue augmentation procedure. HA fillers like Juvederm and Restylane usually produce a softer, plumper look that is not always ideal for the chin and jaw, especially in men.
  2. Fat Transfer for Chin & Jawline Enhancement
Using fat for chin augmentation is a reasonable alternative to injectable fillers for men and women who want a more permanent result. The procedure can be performed under local or twilight anesthesia, and it involves your plastic surgeon taking a small amount fat from your abdomen, hips, or thighs using small volume liposuction techniques, and then using fine cannulas to inject the fat into your chin. The main benefit of this procedure is the obvious one of it being a permanent, but it is also important to know that a touch up treatment or two is commonly needed to get the perfect result because of the unpredictable nature of fat transfer. On average, about 50% of the injected fat will dissolve, but this is not an exact figure so occasionally more or less than 50% will be left behind. Whatever fat is left behind after 3-6 months will likely stay there permanently, but this may or may not be the exact volume you like, so a touch up procedure may be necessary. Injectable fillers are much more predictable in their shape and volume, and the results are visible immediately. The tradeoff with injectables is that they usually need to be repeated every year. With fat transfer, a permanent result is theoretically possible, but you will have to wait much longer to see that result, and a few additional treatments may be required for perfection. The downtime after fat transfer can also be quite a bit longer than with injectable fillers, so this is another consideration that must be taken into account.
  3. Chin and Jaw Implants
Chin implants are an excellent permanent option for chin and jawline enhancement, and they are also highly customizable similar to injectable products. Chin implants come in a variety of shapes and sizes that can augmentation the chin alone, or span out onto the jawline to smooth out the jawline and hide jowls or micro jowls. Jaw angle implants are another option for men seeking a more square, prominent jaw, while the opposite look is usually preferable in women who want a more triangular, delicate jawline. In women, Botox for Jawline Contouringis an option to shrink the large masseter muscles near the angle of the jaw by the ear to create a less wide, more feminine appearance.
  4. Bone Recontouring Surgery for Chin & Jawline Enhancement (Osseus Genioplasty)
Bone recontouring surgery is the ultimate chin and jawline treatment which can produce dramatic and excellent results, but the tradeoff is a significantly increased cost and recovery as compared to the above procedures. A significant amount of bruising and swelling are very common after procedures of this magnitude, but if this is not a concern for you, the results can be outstanding once fully healed.

Are there any visible scars after chin augmentation procedures?

In most cases there are no visible scars. The only exception would be a chin augmentation procedure performed through a sub mental incision under the chin instead of through an incision on the inside of the mouth. This incision choice is usually a personal preference, but on some occasions your surgeon may recommend one over of the other depending on the details of the procedure. All of the other chin augmentation procedures listed here either utilize injections, which leave no visible scars, or incisions in the inside of the mouth, which also leave no visible scars.

How long do I need to take off work to have chin augmentation?

For injectable chin augmentation procedures, it is not necessary to take any time off work. Bruising and swelling are usually minimal, especially if you spend some time icing the evening after the procedure. With fat transfer, it may necessary to take 3-4 days off of work because some bruising and swelling will almost always be present, and to a greater degree than with simple Radiesse injectable products. For surgical options like chin and jaw implants, a full week of time off is recommended, and for bone recontouring surgery, taking 10 days to 2 weeks off is best.

How much does chin augmentation cost?

The answer to this question depends entirely on which procedure, or combination of procedures you choose. Chin injections can range from $800 to $2500 depending on the degree of augmentation desired. Fat transfer can range from $3500 to about $6000 also depending on the degree of augmentation required. Implants for chin and jaw augmentation can range from $5000 to $12,000 depending on the number of locations on the jawline that are being augmented, and bone recontouring surgery can range from $8500 to $15,000 again depending on the amount of recontouring being done.
