Gummy Bear Breast Implants: VIDEO

Many people still believe that saline breast implants are a safer choice over silicone, but in many cases this belief is based on old information about outdated implant technology.

Now that highly-cohesive silicone gel implants (AKA Gummy Bear Implants) are FDA-approved for cosmetic breast augmentations, comparing saline to silicone is like comparing apples to oranges. When silicone implants were made with a liquid silicone core in the 1970’s, leaks were a real concern, and it made sense that perhaps a saline implant might be a better choice.

Nowadays, the majority of silicone breast implants are manufactured with a highly-cohesive silicone gel core, and therefore leaks are essentially a thing of the past. Because of this, the choice between saline and silicone has become much more straightforward. The gel core in the newest generation silicone implants is “cohesive” which means that it sticks to itself and does not travel away from its own silicone core. The above video shows a highly-cohesive gel implant that has been physically cut in half with a scalpel. As you can see, the silicone gel is a solid gel that doesn’t leak out of the implant shell even when the shell has been cut. And even though this gel is a solid, it is still incredibly soft so this implant feels very natural after surgery.

Gummy Bear Breast Implants

Gummy Bear Breast ImplantsAccording to the figures released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), nearly 300,000 breast augmentation procedures are performed in the U.S. each year. That makes it one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures in the country. Other breast surgery procedures such as breast lift and breast reduction are also sought after by many patients. Dr. Nicholas Vendemia in Manhattan, NYC is an experienced plastic surgeon for these procedures.

What are Gummy Bear Implants?

Traditional saline and silicone gel implants have been used for breast implant surgery for several years ever since these were approved by the FDA. However, in recent times, implant manufacturers have come up with advanced qualities of form stable implants in the United States. These implants are made from highly cohesive silicone gel to ensure that they can mimic the natural shape, touch and feel of the breast as closely as possible.

These implants are thicker at the bottom and tend to taper towards the top. The higher consistency of the silicone gel in these implants helps them maintain this natural shape. Even if the implant is damaged, broken or cut in half, the highly cohesive silicone gel does not flow out from the shell. These advanced implants are popularly known as gummy bear implants. Their approval by the FDA has caused a new revolution in the field of breast augmentation surgery.

Benefits

Gummy bear implants provide numerous benefits that were not previous available with traditional saline or silicone implants. Therefore, Dr. Vendemia, who is an expert for breast surgery procedures such as breast implants, breast lift and breast reduction, recommends these implants to suitable candidates in and around New York City. He will examine a patient’s breast anatomy and aesthetic goals before recommending the most appropriate implant options. If the optimal choice is gummy bear implants, Dr. Vendemia will recommend them to the patient.

One of the key benefits of these implants is that they are able to match the natural shape of the breast, providing more fullness towards the bottom of the breast. Since the silicone core in these implants are stiffer and highly cohesive, ripples, and wrinkling of the implant is reduced. Additional firmness that these implants provide is usually preferred by the patients. Some studies have indicated that these textured gummy bear implants reduce the risk of the patient developing capsular contracture.

Minimal Risk of Leakage

The FDA had originally approved only saline implants because saline solution is highly biocompatible. In the event of implant damage, the solution gets naturally absorbed in the body. However, the saline implants had several limitations, which made many people choose silicone implants despite their perceived higher risk of leakage. Now this limitation of silicone implants has been completely set aside with the introduction of FDA approved gummy bear implants.

In that sense, gummy bear implants offer the best of both the worlds. Their safety quotient is very high because the risk of leakage is almost non-existent. If the implant becomes damaged or breaks due to any reason, the highly cohesive silicone gel from the core will not leak out or spread to other parts of the body. It will remain confined in its position only.
