Highly cohesive silicone gel implants (AKA “Gummy Bear Implants”) are the gold standard for breast implant technology today, and now there is another shape to add to your list of choices: the teardrop, or anatomic, shape.

The teardrop implant supposedly has a more natural slope and looks more like a natural breast as compared to the myriad of round implant options (low, moderate, high, and ultra-high profiles). The teardrop implant is an exciting step forward in the world of cosmetic breast surgery, but this implant isn’t for everyone, so make sure you discuss all the details with your surgeon before signing on the dotted line.

Gummy Bear Breast Implants: VIDEO

Many people still believe that saline breast implants are a safer choice over silicone, but in many cases this belief is based on old information about outdated implant technology.

Now that highly-cohesive silicone gel implants (AKA Gummy Bear Implants) are FDA-approved for cosmetic breast augmentations, comparing saline to silicone is like comparing apples to oranges. When silicone implants were made with a liquid silicone core in the 1970’s, leaks were a real concern, and it made sense that perhaps a saline implant might be a better choice.

Nowadays, the majority of silicone breast implants are manufactured with a highly-cohesive silicone gel core, and therefore leaks are essentially a thing of the past. Because of this, the choice between saline and silicone has become much more straightforward. The gel core in the newest generation silicone implants is “cohesive” which means that it sticks to itself and does not travel away from its own silicone core. The above video shows a highly-cohesive gel implant that has been physically cut in half with a scalpel. As you can see, the silicone gel is a solid gel that doesn’t leak out of the implant shell even when the shell has been cut. And even though this gel is a solid, it is still incredibly soft so this implant feels very natural after surgery.

Before and After Teardrop Gummy Bear Implants

Many women wonder how soon new breast implants start looking good, and here is a great example.

This is a 32 year old woman who had a Playmate Breast AugmentationTM with Natrelle teardrop gummy bear (Style 410, Full Height, Full Projection) 335cc breast implants, under the muscle. This is the result at only three weeks after surgery. The skin below her nipple will continue to stretch and round out over time, the implants will continue to soften, and continue to look better and better all the way to a full two years after her procedure.

Her procedure was quite difficult in that she had so little natural breast tissue to begin with, and because she was using a sizable breast implant with a great deal of projection. Better Breast Implants with The Playmate Breast Augmentation Technique

This is a 32 year old woman who wanted sexier, larger breast implants without looking over the top or unnatural. She elected to undergo a breast implant revision surgery using the Playmate Breast Augmentation Technique that is specifically designed to handle the issue of placing larger size breast implants with a natural, sexy appearance.

Her 350cc saline implants were replaced with Inspira Full Profile SRF 560cc silicone implants, and this is the result at 3 weeks after surgery. Even though her implants are more than 200cc larger, they actually look more natural, more symmetric, and more proportional. This kind of result can only be accomplished with the Playmate Technique in which the implant is placed in a way that allows it to sit in a natural position even though it is a significantly larger than average size.

In addition to the size increase, and more central cleavage, the position of her nipples has been corrected so that they no longer appear to be pointing down. The end result is incredibly sexy, but natural at the same time. And because she chose the new Inspira implants, her breasts have the ultra natural feel of the teardrop implants, but the appearance of a full profile round shape.

Superior Results in Asian Breast Augmentation with Teardrop Shaped Gummy Bear Implants

Breast augmentation in Asian women is often more difficult and challenging, and it requires a superior implant for superior results.

Asian women often have very little natural breast tissue, poorly defined folds under the breasts (or sometimes no folds at all), and sometimes prominent asymmetry of the breasts and underlying rib cage. All of these anatomic factors make breast augmentation in Asian women far more difficult than the average breast augmentation case.

In my experience, the teardrop shaped Gummy Bear Implants provide a far superior result in the Asian breast augmentation population. The teardrop implants provide far better expansion of the lower pole of the breast, which is essentially non-existent in many of my Asian patients, and give a far more natural upper pole, especially in profile. The teardrop gummy bears also do a significantly better job creating a sharply defined fold under each breast, which is critically important for a natural, pleasing result.

The two photo galleries below compare the results between two patients that are the same age, height, weight, starting cup size, and final implant volume. The only different is that the first patient had smooth round moderate profile silicone implants, and the second patient had textured gummy bear teardrop shaped implants. The starting appearance in the “Before” photos is fairly typical for young Asian women in my practice, although the results are very good in both cases, the final result is far superior with the teardrop gummy bear implants in the second photo gallery.

The Gummy Bear Implants do a significantly better job expanding the extremely tight skin, correcting asymmetries, defining the new inframammary folds (folds under the breasts), and creating a soft and natural looking slope in the upper chest.
