The No Touch Technique for Breast Augmentation: the new gold standard

Keller Funnel No Touch Breast Augmentation by New York Plastic Surgeon Dr Nicholas Vendemia of MASHere at MAS, we are committed to innovation and advancement in breast augmentation surgery, and we thought that it would be prudent to introduce you to what we feel is becoming the new gold standard for breast implant insertion: the No-Touch Technique utilizing the Keller Funnel.

The Keller Funnel is a specialized polymer sleeve used to insert implants of all types into the body without actually having to touch the implant or expose it to potential contaminants on the skin surface, the operative field, or from the air. The sleeve allows the implant to be transferred directly from it’s sterile container through the incision with minimal exposure to it’s surroundings, and also allows for a near-frictionless insertion that minimizes stress on the implant and the incision.

The No-Touch Technique offers the highest possible level of sterility and safety, and we are proud to offer this technique to our exclusive breast augmentation clientele. Keep reading for more information and a video demonstration of the Keller Funnel in action.

When can I get a massage after breast augmentation surgery?

having a massage with breast implantsAhhhhh… there’s nothing like a good massage… just not too soon after breast augmentation surgery.

It’s a good idea to wait at least 6 weeks after your breast augmentation procedure to have a massage that requires you to lay on your stomach for more than a few minutes. The pressure of your bodyweight, plus the extra force that your practitioner uses during the massage, will displace your breasts to the sides and may stretch the implant capsules enough to allow the implants themselves to shift towards the sides more than you might like. This could lead to a widening of the space between your breasts and less cleavage.

Keep reading to learn more about the precautions you can take for massages after breast augmentation, and about other issues related to laying on your stomach when you have breast implants.

My Botox only lasts a few months. Is this normal?

botox_cosmeticThe short answer to this question is yes, it is normal, but only for a small percentage of people.

Lip Enhancement for smoother lips with less wrinkles

This is a 33 year old woman who wanted smoother lips with less wrinkles, and a slightly enhanced version of her own natural shape. As you can see, she already had full lips with good proportion and symmetry, so the technique used here was a special one designed to smooth as many of the wrinkles as possible without adding a look of volume or additional fullness. This is the result immediately after very precise injection of 1.5 syringes of Juvederm. The wrinkles are nearly gone so her lipstick will go on smoother and last longer, the naturally full shape of her bottom lip looks even better without being overdone, and the cupid’s bow of her top lip is also more prominent and prettier. The very slight asymmetry of her bottom lip has also been corrected for a more even appearance.

Using the deep heating technology of the Palomar MaxIR to treat non-cosmetic ailments

There are several options on the market for nonsurgical laser skin tightening, but we chose the MaxIR Infrared platform from Palomar Medical for our practice because of it’s added versatility in treating a variety of non-cosmetic conditions:

spine in back pain

  • Joint and Muscle Pains. Intense subcutaneous heating has long been known to be beneficial for acute and chronic joint and muscle pains, but the infrared delivery system takes this process to new levels and makes it a useful tool for sports injury rehabilitations of all types, including muscle tears and sprains, joint injuries, or common muscle fatigue after intense competition. Runners, athletes, and weekend warriors can all benefit from this unique treatment modality.
  • Chronic Back Pain. Anyone who has ever suffered from chronic back pain knows the feeling of relief when an external heat pack is applied, but the deep-penetrating heat of the MaxIR takes this to a new level. The infrared laser heat not only feels quite good, but also increases circulation and relaxes tense muscles for extended relief.
  • Plantar Fasciitis. This is a common condition among women in New York who wear high heels every day, and the MaxIR can help with the pain and inflammation on the bottom of the foot by stimulating increased circulation and relieving the painful spasms of small foot muscles.
  • Migraines. Infrared deep heating of the temporalis muscle and scalp can produce some relief for migraine sufferers, especially when combined with our exclusive Botox for Migraines procedure. We have migraine patients from all over the country travel to New York 2-3 times a year for this combination because it is so highly effective, even for the worst cases of migraines that have not responded to many other forms of treatment.
  • TMJ. Deep-penetrating heat applied to the masseter and temporalis muscles has been shown to provide some level of relief for patients with mild-moderate TMJ symptoms.
  • Post Liposuction Recovery. Deep subcutaneous heating can be used to speed the recovery process, and provide further skin tightening, after liposuction procedures.

If you would like more information about any of the above treatments, or about the cosmetic version of Laser Skin Tightening with the MaxIR platform, please don’t hesitate to give us a call at 917-703-7069.

Kim Kardashian looked great at her Vegas Birthday Bash

Kim Kardashian birthday pics las vegasIf you ask me, I would say that Kim Kardashian’s 34th birthday bash in Las Vegas this past weekend was a big success…

… not because of her gorgeous white dress… and not because of the huge amount of press the event brought in. It was a success because Kim looked better than she’s looked in several years. It’s no secret that Kim is a fan of plastic surgery, and until now she’s been looking a little over the top, particularly with her Botox, cheeks, and lips. All of those seem to have been brought back under control without taking away from her usual ultra-voluptuous Hollywood look.

Keep reading for a breakdown of which plastic surgery procedures are working for her right now, and what she might be able to do better in the future to keep this look going through the rest of her 30’s and 40’s.

4 Ways a Breast Lift Can Perk Up Your Figure

Woman covering breastChanges in diet, weight fluctuations, pregnancy and age can all affect the placement of breasts, but that doesn’t mean you’re stuck with a sagging figure. Here are four ways a breast lift can re-boost your assets.

1. Restores a Youthful Figure

Many women who undergo breast lift surgery are pleased to find that they can once again enjoy the perkier silhouette they had when they were younger. A breast lift can bring the position of the breasts up to a higher placement on the torso and heighten the bust line, reshaping breast tissue to give a rounder, more youthful appearance.

Liquid Rhinoplasty for a Better Bridge

Nonsurgical rhinoplasty, sometimes referred to as a “Liquid Rhinoplasty”, is increasing in popularity for both men and women interested in improving the appearance of their noses without surgery.

One of the best uses for liquid rhinoplasty techniques is to define or build up a flattened nasal bridge. A flat bridge can throw the entire middle section of the face out of balance, so restoring the bridge with a liquid rhinoplasty can be a very powerful, but also very subtle, way to reestablish harmony and proportion to the face as a whole, not just the nose.

Six FAQ’s about Breast Augmentation

Best breast augmentation doctors in nycAs a specialist in breast augmentation, aesthetic plastic surgeon Dr. Nicholas Vendemia is happy to answer any questions you might have about enhancing your breasts. Below you’ll find some of the most commonly asked questions from patients at MAS about breast enlargement so you can feel ready to move forward with your own surgery.

#1. Am I a candidate for breast augmentation?

If you’re unhappy with a small breast size, or you’ve noticed changes in the shape or size of your breasts after weight loss or pregnancy, you may be a good candidate for breast augmentation. Women can also use breast implants to improve symmetry, or to restore the natural volume loss that can occur with aging. It’s important to be in good general physical and mental health, and to have realistic expectations about what breast augmentation can achieve for you.

#2. How do I choose the right breast implant size?

Picking the perfect implant size can feel like a lot of pressure. That’s why Dr. Vendemia schedules two pre-surgery consultations, giving him plenty of time with you to discuss your ideals for surgery. You can also try on implants in the office to help narrow down sizes and profiles that feel right for you. Dr. Vendemia also recommends bringing in some photos of your dream look to better help him gauge the implant size, type and profile that will help you meet those goals.

#3. Can I get large breast implants and still have a natural look?

Many surgeons will tell you that more moderately sized implants are a must for natural-looking breast augmentation results, but not every woman wants to compromise on size. For this reason, Dr. Vendemia developed the Playmate Breast Augmentation™. By taking extra care to take more precise steps during surgery, Dr. Vendemia is able to achieve a very flattering look using extra large or high-profile implants.

The Top 3 Tips for Winter Skincare

Harsh winter weather tends to dry the skin, but with a few quick and easy adjustments to your normal skincare routine, you should be able to make it through the season unscathed. Learn more about our Top 3 Tips for Winter Skincare, or feel free to check out some our most popular clinical skincare services by clicking here.

how to change your winter skin care routine

  1. Don’t stop your sunscreen! While it’s true that winter sun is less intense than summer sun, unprotected exposure to UV rays will damage your skin year round. Make sure to use a product with a minimum SPF of 30 under your makeup every day. My personal favorite is Dermaquest ZinClear Zinc Oxide sunscreen… it offers max protection from both UVA and UVB, it dries clear and light enough to apply easily under makeup, and it’s both noncomedogenic and fragrance-free. ZinClear is such an excellent clinical product that we also use it as a finisher for our most advanced skin treatments to ensure that freshly-treated, sensitive skin is well protected as soon as our patients step out of the office.
  2. Don’t stop exfoliating! High quality exfoliative regimens can sometimes lead to overly dry skin in the wintertime, but proper daily exfoliation is still the key to beautiful skin that lasts forever. Try a more gentle setting with more passes when using your Clarisonic brush (highly recommended!), and replace your usual cleanser with a more gentle version like Aveeno Ultra Calming Foaming Facial Cleanser.
  3. Repair while you sleep. Your skin repairs itself at night, so be sure to give it the tools it needs to do it’s job. Eucerin Redness Relief Soothing Night Creme is an excellent high-end OTC moisturizer that is powerful enough take on the tough task of hydrating dry winter skin, but also gentle enough not to feel heavy or clog pores.

In addition to bringing the breasts lower on the body, sagging can alter the shape and texture of the breasts. The Laser Bra Breast Lift is an innovative technique designed to lift the breasts into a youthful shape and position. Here are three benefits of the Laser Bra Lift.

1. Faster Surgery & Shorter Recovery Period

Through the use of advanced laser technology, the Laser Bra Lift procedure takes up to 40 minutes less than a traditional breast lift surgery. Botox for Frizzy Hair

botox for frizzy hair treatments in new yorkWhile Botox for wrinkles continues to be the most popular use for this wonder-injectable, new treatments arise all the time.

The newest use of Botox Cosmetic is to combat frizzy hair, which may or may not coincide with the theoretical mechanism of action of Botox for hair loss. When Botox is precisely injected into the scalp skin, it relaxes all of the structure around the hair follicle which most likely allows for greater blood flow and oxygen delivery for a healthier follicle that is less likely to stop producing hair, and also for relaxation of the neuromuscular bundles that supply these follicles and contribute to changes in hair position and texture.

An additional benefit of any Botox for hair treatment (frizziness, thinning hair, or hair loss) is the natural sweat reduction that occurs anywhere that Botox is injected. Botox for excessive sweating is an actual treatment in and of itself in areas of the body that are prone to this condition (armpits, hands, and feet), but effective sweat reduction is also seen in the forehead and scalp after Botox for winkles, Botox for frizzy hair, Botox for thinning hair, Botox for hair loss, and Botox for Migraines.

So the next time you find yourself frizzed out and drenched in sweat after your summer spin class, think about asking your favorite plastic surgeon about Botox for frizzy hair the next time you schedule a cosmetic injectable session. The treatment is quick and easy, but is it not inexpensive given that 100-150 units are typically necessary to see good results.

The Top 4 Targets for Micro Lipo

Microliposuction is a specialized liposuction technique designed to treat areas of the face and body that are too small for traditional liposuction. Micro lipo often focuses on tightening the skin, although fat removal is performed in conjunction as needed. Here are four great target areas for micro lipo.

#1. Under the Chin

Microliposuction can be performed under the chin to get rid of the stubborn “turkey neck” fat that blunts the neckline from the front and profile views. The entire procedure can usually be performed through a tiny 2-3mm incision hidden in the natural skin crease under the chin where most people already have a scar from childhood trips and falls. The recovery is quick and easy, and short of wearing a compression strap at nighttime for a few fews, you can be back to work 2-3 days after the procedure.

#2. Jowls

Heavy jowls are excellent candidates for micro-liposuction, but thin jowls usually require some sort of skin-tightening procedure to fix. Thick, heavy jowls most likely have an element of extra fat that can be liposuctioned out using specially designed microliposuction cannulas, and then the fat can also be used to recontour the grooves around the jowls for additional smoothing.

#3. Knees

Excess fat above the knees can be treated with microliposuction, but the main benefit here is the skin tightening that occurs as a result of the collagen-stimulating healing response that is generated after the procedure. Some mild bruising and tenderness is possible for a few days, but overall the procedure and the recovery are relatively straightforward and easy.

#4. Cankles

Excess fat around the ankle can blunt the attractive curves of the lower leg, and microlipo can be a great option in this delicate area. The ankles are a particularly tricky area to sculpt and require a skilled surgical touch, along with very special equipment designed for this type of procedure. Compression stockings are necessary for a few weeks after surgery, but the initial results are visible in just a few days.

How to choose the right size implants for breast augmentation

how to choose the right size for breast implantsThere are several ways to make sure you choose the best possible size for your breast augmentation procedure.

While some surgeons rely on the “eyeball” method to select breast implants for their patients, there are far more accurate methods available, and you should take advantage of as many of them as you can to make sure that both you and your surgeon are as confident as possible in the size. It does take some time, and possibly a few office visits, to pick the best size and shape, but it is always worth the small amount of extra effort.

New Inspira® Breast Implants get FDA Approval for Cosmetic Breast Augmentation

Allergan gets FDA approval for new Inspira breast implantsAllergan Medical is introducing a new line of highly-cohesive silicone gel gummy bear breast implants to the market in June of 2015.

The Inspira® implants have been designed to fill a void between the ultra soft feel of the Natrelle implant line and the firmer feel of the teardrop shaped Style 410 line. The fill ratio of the Inspira implants is higher than the standard Natrelle devices but not as form stable as the 410’s, thereby giving the Inspira’s the middle spot in terms of cohesively and firmness.

This is an important product for the market right now because many women find themselves torn between the ultra-natural shape of the teardrop 410 implants and the ultra soft feel of the round Natrelle implants. The Inspira line should fill this gap and give women a choice of gel firmness that is somewhere in between these other two implant lines, and make the decision process a bit easier.

The Best Clinical Sunscreens

the best clinical sunscreensThe American Melanoma Foundation is sponsoring an initiative to find more innovative and more effective sun protection products to help decrease the incidence of skin cancer.

It’s nice to see an initiative like this because there hasn’t been much thought in the world of SPF in recent years, and with our ozone depleting, and more of the damaging rays making it to our skin, it’s more important than ever to know how to protect it. The shelves of any Duane Read are lined with so many product choices that it can make your head spin, so anything that can narrow down those choices for us and give us some direction when it comes to sun protection, is a very good thing. Why do doctors charge consultation fees?

– by Karin Ruiz, Patient Coordinator at Manhattan Aesthetic Surgery

Woman Calling for a consultationConsultation fees are a hot topic in the cosmetic surgery industry, and since there is so much variability when it comes to who charges, how much they charge, and what the fees actually pay for, I wanted to shed some light on this subject for those of you considering a consultation with us.

At MAS, we do charge consultation fees because we believe that everyone’s time is valuable… especially yours. We treat our consultations like making a reservation for a first-class airline ticket. You can’t reserve your seat without paying the fee, but once it’s confirmed, your spot is guaranteed. You won’t be flying standby wondering whether or not you’ll actually get to make the trip, and you won’t be holding your breath to see who else might be sitting in your seat when you get on the plane. Our consultation fee allows us to reserve your time exclusively for you, and for us to keep wait times to a few minutes or less for over 98% of our visits. You’ll always have a welcoming atmosphere, plenty of time with the doctor, and a seamless, efficient experience from start to finish.

If you want more specific FAQ’s about consultation fees, please give us a call at 917-703-7069 or keep reading to see a list of commonly asked questions about consultation fees…

Don’t Delay Removing PIP Breast Implants

PIP breast implants Many of you will remember the recent scandal brought on by French breast implant maker Poly Implant Prosthese (PIP) when the company was disbanded and the executives jailed over their unethical practices of using non-medical grade silicone to manufacture their silicone breast implants sold throughout the world.

It is estimated that 30,000-40,000 women received PIP breast implants that may have caused, or may be causing, unknown and possibly dangerous side effects because of the likely contamination of the silicone gel used in these implants. When the story broke, we received quite a few calls from understandably worried women who wanted to know how they could tell if they had PIP implants, and what they should do about it if they did. We removed quite a few pairs of these implants during that time period, and helped several of these women deal with complications like severe capsular contractors, recurrent seromas (fluid collections), and PIP breast implant ruptures, but since that time we’ve noticed a dropoff in both the frequency of these calls, and in the sense of urgency on the calls that still come in.

If you or anyone you know had breast implants place in any country other than the United States in the past 20-25 years, please keep reading for an important reminder about the dangers of PIP implants, and why you should be concerned even if you aren’t sure if you have them…

Popular Treatments for Spider Veins

spider vein treatments in NYCWe came across a recent article in the New Beauty Mag blog about spider vein treatments, and since our very own plastic surgeon, Dr. Nicholas Vendemia, does quite a few sclerotherapy injections for spider veins on a weekly basis, we wanted to get his feedback.
